Her Trails is an initiative by endurance athlete and incredible human being Samantha Gash. These amazing retreats create a space where women can deeply connect - with themselves, with nature, and with one another. A chance for them to tap into their courage and see what they’re truly capable of. OTIS proudly supported a recent Her Trails trip to the heart of Australia. The resulting journey was an amazing thing to see. Here’s an inside look at the highlights.
We sat down with Samantha and asked her for some extra insights into what the Her Trails trips are all about. Dive in and be inspired to find your own adventure below.
What do you personally get out of these Her Trails adventures, and what do you hope the women who come along get out of it?
Personally, I draw immense joy and inspiration from seeing women tap into courage and resilience they may not have known they had. Every retreat reminds me of the power of community and shared experience. My hope is that each woman leaves with a renewed sense of possibility, a toolbox of practical skills, and a supportive network that continues to encourage her long after the trip ends. Ultimately, it’s about helping each participant step into her own strength, both on the trail and in her everyday life.
What’s unique about this adventure that inspires you (and others)?
Many find the idea of meeting new people in such an immersive setting a bit overwhelming in concept. But when these women are invited to explore and drop their invisible rules and let go of self-imposed limitations, something profound happens. In that environment, they start to embrace their unique qualities, realising they’re celebrated for who they truly are. What makes each person different becomes a strength. This connection extended well beyond our time on Country - this group has already reunited since the trip, planning new adventures and personal challenges together. That bond and the collective experience always transcend location, but that environment has a particular way of opening people up and creating that magic.
What was the biggest challenge of the trip, and how did you overcome it?
The Northern Territories harsh climate and rugged terrain were definitely challenging, especially with the relentless heat. We faced this by adapting our days to include rest periods, focusing on hydration, and encouraging everyone to be mindful of pacing and listen closely to their bodies. Our Her Trails and NT based guides were phenomenal, keeping everyone motivated and safe. This approach helped everyone overcome the physical and mental strain and reminded us of the power of adaptability and community.
What is your pinnacle memory of the trip, and why was it so special?
One of the most unforgettable moments was watching the sunrise atop Mount Sonder. I don’t like to give too much away, as we build in a lot of reveals and surprises throughout the trip, but there’s something incredibly special about waking in the middle of the night, hiking up a mountain in complete darkness, and arriving at the summit just as the first rays of light break over the horizon. It’s a powerful experience to be huddled together in a “snuggle puddle,” feeling the wind wrap around you, as the day begins. In that moment, with the right people by your side, there’s a palpable sense that anything is possible if we set our minds to it. It’s a feeling that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Who did you most notice grew personally on this trip, and why?
One woman in particular came into the experience with a lot of self-doubt, uncertain if she was physically or mentally equipped for the challenge. At first, she struggled, feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of the trail. But each day, she pushed herself a little further, inspired by the support of the group and her own growing confidence. By the end, she was not only leading others but radiating pride in her own growth. It was a beautiful reminder that often the biggest obstacles are the stories we tell ourselves, and once we challenge those, incredible things become possible.
You took some OTIS sunglasses on the trip. How’d they stand up to the tests of the trail?
The OTIS sunglasses were fantastic on this trip. They blend style with purpose, creating eyewear that you want to wear daily but that also holds up to the demands of rugged adventures. The frames are durable, the lenses provide excellent glare-free visibility in intense sunlight, and they stayed secure through all of our hikes and runs. I really love the fusion of adventure and fashion that OTIS brings to their designs. Looking feminine and stylish while being a bit of a badass on the trails is a vibe I always aim for, and these sunglasses nail that balance of style and performance.
Finally, where is the next Her Trails adventure, and how do women get involved?
The next Her Trails adventure will be along the stunning Larapinta Trail in April 2025, with dates from April 21 to 27. We’re also excited to host a mother-and-child retreat, fostering connection and exploration, from April 14 to 19, 2025. Each experience is designed to support women of all backgrounds and experience levels, inviting them to step into a supportive, empowering environment where adventure, connection, and personal growth are deeply intertwined.
