You’ve probably seen Jack Medland’s head in some of OTIS’s images over the years. Jack is not only is he a quintessential surfer-shaper, but is also a long time friend and local ambassador of OTIS.
Jacks intrigue into the art of shaping and surfing started when he was a young grom. He started fixing dings on his own surfboards as a kid and sweeping the floors at Soul Board Store in Perth amongst truly iconic surf paraphernalia. The first board he ever shaped came from an old kiteboard he found at the tip, stripped the fibreglass off and remodelled.
Fast forward to today, Medsy has his own successful business - Moonshine Surfboards, which he started with his mate Pete in 2019. The Moonshine factory is a stones throw away from the OTIS HQ in Yallingup, and to Jack it is the haven where he spends his days designing and making traditional surf crafts, only re-imagined with a Moonshine twist for the modern surfer.
Jack has carved out a niche living the nostalgic life we all look at and think ‘that’s the way it should be done’. Vintage cars. Vintage surfboards. Modern approach. Despite the laidback appearance of his lifestyle, Jack hustles hard, working around the clock to refine his equipment, seek the perfect materials, and work his art among foam dust and the wild weather extremes that get served up in the South West. This dedication to design and producing the highest-quality products is a passion Jack shares with the crew at OTIS.
In his commitment to becoming a master of the craft, Jack understands the importance of putting his product to the test. So in the spirit of some good old fashioned research and development, Jack and the Moonshine crew recently rounded up a bunch of mates and embarked on a trip to the remote Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. They packed all sorts of boards, some fishing rods, and a decent stock of Bintangs to sail off into the sunset for a few weeks.
This captivating clip is the result. Mirage is Moonshine Surfboards' latest surf film, set against the dreamy backdrop of the Mentawai Islands. Featuring the Moonshine team, the film captures fluid surfing and the versatility of Moonshine Surfboards distinctive shapes.
